TekFront reviews WinGate 5.0 April 17th, 2003 I can remember when people were lucky to have one computer and internet access with a 56K modem. Times are changing and doing so in a rapid fashion. The common question when visiting someone's home or business now, is do you have high speed access and are you networked? Granted those choices aren't available to everyone, but it's expanding on a daily basis. If you have broadband, the kids want to be online, you want to pay the bills, and the wife wants to shop online, in today's world that's possible. However, to share internet access on a network, you need a router which is a stand alone hardware device, or some kind of connection sharing software. It has to be remembered that not every person is rich, or a techie, so whatever they choose has to be simple, easy to use, an all in one packages, and last but not least, it's got to be inexpensive. The problem is the consumer has so many choices to choose from, however, we found a program [called] WinGate 5.0. Its feature rich, easy to use, and it's all inclusive. Keep reading to see what we thought.
Feature List Check this list of features folks! WinGate has it all in one package! It's suitable for just about any connectivity solution, in our tests we couldn't find a connection type it wouldn't accept! The best thing about Wingate, it's all in one package, a firewall, virus scanning, proxy server, DNS Server, DHCP Server, and a content filter. All be it just a few of Wingate's many features these are the most commonly used. We could write a book on this feature set! WinGatehas all the features of a high end hardware based router in an easy to understand GUI. Track your activity real time, see who does what, and make sure your dollars aren't wasted! Check it out, this is another big plus about Wingate, you won't have to take out a loan to have a system to run these features, in most cases you can drag that machine out of the closet you thought was outdated and put it to good use! We do recommend that you set aside a dedicated machine for internet sharing if you have a large network. Beyond, purchasing it, deciding where you want it installed, and double clicking the executable, that's really all it takes with Wingate. WinGatewill take a look at your network on install and configure itself to your network. You really can't ask a program to be any easier.
Conclusions Using WinGate 5.0 gives you power, control and flexibility over the type of internet access offered in your corporation. It's a cost effective solution that's often cheaper than a mainstream router, and not nearly as difficult to use! Here at Tekfront.com, we have WinGate 5.0 powering our servers, and we think if you give it a try, you will to!
February 1st, 2003 from Serverwatch review: "WinGate Pro: Top-of-the-line proxy server that comes with an e-mail server, spam filtering, and a full suite of plug-in features" "...WinGate Pro is a top contender among Windows-based proxy servers...Developed by Qbik New Zealand, Ltd and marketed by Deerfield.com, WinGate Pro is one of the most complete systems available. "In addition to providing features that are more or less common to other proxy servers, WinGate goes several steps further. The first is the inclusion of a basic mail server... WinGate VPN licensing is also included in the Pro and Enterprise versions of WinGate. This unusual feature underscores the flexibility and security orientation of WinGate. "Two more add-on features round out the package: The GateFilter module provides content filtering for Web sites based on analysis of the site rather than using a blocking list or external database. The VisNetic AntiVirus package provides competent virus protection for all Internet connections and mail services. "While there are products available with more depth for certain features (e.g., Kerio Mail Server has more anti-virus options), few have as comprehensive a range of features. Of course, to use all the WinGate capabilities requires more work and additional cost. Is it worth it? We think it is if the goal is to use server-based features to lower the cost on individual workstations (for example, you don't need anti-virus software on every machine) and provide better control over access and security. "For these purposes we believe WinGate Pro 5 to be a top-of-the-list product." | ||||||||||
