Basic Information about MDaemon SSL

The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) -- also known as Transport Layer Security (TLS) -- can protect your MDaemon email communications on the Internet by using:

An authentication certificate resides on your server. The certificate makes sure your users are communicating with your server only and not with an intruder who is ”spoofing” your Internet address to intercept, alter or otherwise wrongly use your information.

Data encryption converts ordinary data into codes only the sender and receiver software can understand. It uses public and private “keys” to encode and decode two-way data traveling between the server and the client. The private key resides on the server and is never shared. The public key is made available to all users. The private and public keys can work only with each other.

A personal authentication certificate resides on a client computer. It verifies the identify and ownership of the client computer attempting to connect to a server.

MDaemon can use SSL for its IMAP, POP, SMTP and WorldClient webmail functions, providing secure communications. Setting up SSL for email and webmail are individual and independent. Email SSL setup is for IMAP, POP and SMTP. Webmail SSL setup is for WorldClient.

The majority of the SSL configuration options are available through the SSL & Certificates command in the Security menu.
