MDaemon Installation
Introduction
MDaemon is available as a download from http://www.xasp.co.uk/saltn At your option,
it can install the email server, the remote configuration software and WorldClient webmail
server.
Requirements
Information You Need
You need to know this information and answer these questions:
- Installation folder, the default is the MDaemon folder on your start up disk.
- Name of the individual or company owning the MDaemon license.
- Name of your Alt-N distributor.
- Which components you want to install: the email server, the remote configuration software
and WorldClient webmail server.
- The IP addresses of the Domain Name Servers you want the email server to use. You can also
just use the Windows default DNS servers.
- The first and last name of your first account holder. Do you want this person to be the email
postmaster and have webmail administrative privileges?
- Do you what MDaemon to run as a Windows service.
- Domain name of your email server. If your ISP is aliasing all of the mail you receive -- that
is, if you do not have a registered domain name -- use company.mail as your domain name.
- POP host name, logon ID and password if you are using DomainPOP mail from your ISP.
Hardware and Software
With very few exceptions, MDaemon products run on both the hardware and the version of Windows you
already own. Depending on its intended use, for instance, MDaemon runs on relatively small machines
with any Windows version from Win95 through XP Professional.
Recommended specifications are:
- Pentium III 500 MHz or higher processor
- Internet Explorer 4 or higher
- 256 MB of memory (512 MB recommended)
- Microsoft Windows 9x/ME/XP/NT/2000
- TCP/IP network
- Hard disk space: 30MB plus space for any mail to be stored
- Internet or Intranet communications capabilities
- SSL support
How To
To install MDaemon:
- Download the latest version of MDaemon from http://www.xasp.co.uk/saltn
Note: Keep track of the folder where you download the installer.
- Navigate to the downloaded installer and open it to display the installation wizard.
- If you agree with the license agreement, click on the I Agree command button.
- Select the installation directory and use the Next command button.
- Enter the name of the person or company holding the license, plus the name of the distributor.
These are for documentation purposes. Use the Next command button.
- Select any or all of the components you want to install from these options:
- MDaemon server
- Remote configuration software (MDConfig)
- WorldClient webmail server
- Use the Next command button to continue to the next panel.
- Use the Next command button to install the software. This takes a couple of minutes.
- Enter the IP addresses for the DNS servers you want the email server to use. You can also choose to
use the DNS servers configured for the version of Windows running on the host machine. Use the
Next command button.
- Enter the name, mail box name and password for your first user. Indicate if you want
the user to be the postmaster or a webmail administrator or both. The administrator
can change account information and system configurations. The postmaster receives
notices about security breech attempts, lost mail and MDaemon updates, to name a
few.
- Choose whether to run MDaemon as a System Service and use the Next command button.
While this ends the regular installation you can also do advanced installation at this
point.
- Activate the check box to go through the configuration and use the Next command
button.
- Enter the domain name of your email server, such as altn.com or yourcompany.com. If your
ISP is aliasing all of the mail you receive -- that is, if you do not have a registered
domain name -- then use company.mail as your domain name. Use the Next command
button.
- If you are using DomainPOP email from your ISP, enter the POP Host, Logon Name and password.
Use the Next command button.
- If you want MDaemon to dialup you ISP via modem or ISDN, enter the dialup profile, the logon
name and password and use the Next command button.
- Use the Finish command button to finish the installation and start MDaemon.
