Spam Filtering-How to Set Up White Lists
Introduction
White lists identify email addresses less likely to be spam sources or destinations. However being on a
white list does not exempt and address from AntiSpam processing. Instead white listing adjusts the spam
score of all messages sent to or received from an address to allow most of them to pass. Only messages
with extremely high spam ratings are marked a spam.
White lists can be setup by specifying addresses and by using automatic tracking.
Requirements
You must know:
- the amount you want to adjust the spam score of messages sent to or received from white
listed addresses.
- the address or addresses to white list.
- if you want to use automatic white listing
How To
To configure AntiSpam white lists:
- Use the Spam filter command from the Security menu. This displays the Spam Filter dialog.
- Click on the Spam Filtering tab. This displays the general AntiSpam filtering configuration
controls.
- Enter a number in the text box labeled A white list match subtracts this many points from the spam
score.
AntiSpam subtracts this number from the spam score of each message. The higher this
number, the less likely a message sent to or from a white listed address will be identified as
spam.
If after the subtraction, the spam score of a message is still greater than or equal to the spam
threshold score, the message is marked as spam. (The spam threshold score is the number entered in
the text box labeled A message is spam if its score is greater than or equal to on the Heuristic tab of
the Spam Filter dialog.)
- Use the Apply command button, then select the White List (auto) tab.
- Enable the Enable automatic white listing check box if you want to activate automatic white listing.
Automatic white listing adds and removes addresses depending on their average spam
scores.
- Use the Apply command button, then select the White List (to) tab. This displays a dialog for
entering destination addresses to white list.
- Enter one or more destination addresses into the list. The format is:
whitelist_to name@domain.com
You can use wildcards such as *@domain.com and place multiple addresses on one list, separating
them with spaces.
- Use the Apply command button, then select the White List (from) tab. This displays a dialog for
entering source addresses to white list.
- Enter one or more source addresses into the list. The format is:
whitelist_from name@domain.com
You can use wildcards such as *@domain.com and place multiple addresses on one list, separating
them with spaces.
- Use the Apply command button, then select another tab for additional filtering options or click OK
to exit from the dialog.
